Award winning Afro-pop band, Freshly Ground, is back on the music scene with a fresh new album called “Radio Africa”, which was released on 1 May 2010.
The 11-track album has been received very well; with the first radio single called “Fire is Low” bound to follow in the hugely popular footsteps of the likes of “Doo Be Doo”.The band’s new direction is very different from their previous offerings “Ma Cherie” and “Nomvula.” Freshlyground incorporates elements of traditional South African music (such as kwela and African folk), as well as the familiar sounds of indie rock. Lead singer, Zolani Mahola’s distinctive voice contributes much to the unique style. Album standouts are, as always, hard to pinpoint but one among many is the joyous “Moto”, which includes a traditional chorus sung in the north of Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania. Freshly Ground’s “Waka Waka” song with Colombian artist Shakira was picked up as the official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ song, beating out K’naans “Waving Flag” and Akons “Oh Africa”. They’ve proven time and time again to be a favourite amongst all audiences from young children to their grandparents. “Radio Africa” has been praised by media critics as an addition to their already successful musical career, so if you’re looking for an album with soul and Africa footprints, then can I suggest that “Radio Africa” be added to your “To-get” list?
